Nonprofit Action Brief – Q4 2026
Quarterly theme: Resilience Amid Uncertainty
Nonprofit boards and executives are making decisions for 2027 while important questions remain unsettled. Federal grant rules, operating costs, leadership capacity, donor behavior, and technology risks all deserve attention—but uncertainty is not a reason to postpone the work that matters.
The Q4 2026 Nonprofit Action Brief encourages leaders to know their exposures, prepare realistic options, and make timely decisions that protect mission and organizational capacity.
Four priorities for nonprofit leaders
1. Test financial resilience before making commitments. Map the five largest public-funding exposures and consider how grant conditions, timing, or reimbursement could affect cash. Review donation scenarios—for example, revenue coming in 3%, 5%, or 7% below plan—as planning exercises, not predictions.
2. Protect essential leadership and workforce capacity. Identify the three functions most vulnerable to a vacancy or interruption. Clarify backup coverage, decision authority, documentation, and the support leaders need to sustain performance.
3. Make 2027 choices through the lens of mission and capacity. Review programs and proposed commitments against mission fit, intended outcomes, full cost, available people, and operational readiness. Good governance sometimes requires deciding what not to expand.
4. Strengthen trust and responsible technology practices. Make donor communication clear and consistent. Establish sensible boundaries for sensitive information, AI use, human review, staff training, and leadership oversight. Technology choices should support—not compromise—organizational trust.
A useful board question
Which two or three decisions must we make now to preserve our mission and our capacity to deliver it in 2027?
Give each decision an owner, a target date, and a way to determine whether the response is working.
