Nonprofit Action Brief — Q3 2026
Quarterly theme: Building Resilience Under Pressure
Nonprofit leaders are being asked to do more in an environment where funding, workforce capacity, and public expectations are changing. A balanced budget or a strong mission does not, by itself, mean an organization is prepared for disruption.
The Q3 2026 Nonprofit Action Brief identifies four areas that deserve deliberate attention from executive leaders and boards.
Four priorities for nonprofit leaders
1. Understand your funding and financial exposure. Government funding uncertainty, reimbursement delays, restricted revenue, and the full cost of programs can create pressure that a conventional budget does not reveal. Boards need a clearer view of available cash, revenue concentration, and how the organization would respond to a funding disruption.
2. Strengthen leadership and workforce continuity. Burnout, unclear roles, and reliance on a few key people are organizational risks. Identify where a sudden departure would interrupt operations, then clarify responsibilities, documentation, backups, and development plans.
3. Keep mission and outcomes at the center of decisions. Boards add value when they make choices, not simply receive reports. Evaluate programs by mission fit, measurable outcomes, evidence, full cost, and capacity—not activity alone.
4. Build trust through relationships and responsible practices. Donor retention, community engagement, data protection, and the thoughtful use of AI all affect resilience. Leaders need clear expectations for stewardship, information security, human oversight, and accountability.
A useful question for the next board meeting
If one major source of funding or one essential leader became unavailable tomorrow, what would we do during the first 30, 60, and 90 days?
Use that discussion to identify a manageable set of actions, owners, and review dates.
